In Bangladesh, body soaps are very popular among consumers due to their flavors and low alkali content. The current study assesses the contamination of several trace metals (TMs) such as iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in some of the body soaps most commonly used in Bangladesh. The concentrations of Fe, Cu, Zn, Cr, and Mn were found within the acceptable limits stipulated by the World Health Organization (WHO); however, in contrast, the concentrations of Ni, Cd, and Pb remained below the detection limit. Notably, the concentration of Cr in two soap samples (S-2, S-3) out of twenty-one soap samples exceeded the permissible limit stipulated by the WHO. Health risks associated with the TM intake via dermal routes were evaluated in terms of chronic daily intake (CDI) and hazard quotient (HQ). The results indicated that no non-carcinogenic risks (NCR) are likely to occur owing to the use of those body soaps. The carcinogenic risk (CR) estimated for Cr revealed no possibility of probable carcinogenic diseases. Though the NCR and CR are unlikely to occur resulting from the long-term uses of these soaps, the present study provides baseline information on the possible contaminations of TMs in the beauty soaps that do not seem to have been reported so far in Bangladesh. In light of the above information, it can be concluded that the presence of TMs in the body soaps could be a warning for people in general thereby suggesting continuous monitoring.

A simple wavelength tunable diode laser system has been designed and fabricated for laboratory use. Both the current and temperature controllers are based on an AVR microcontroller, and the experimental controls have been implemented with the help of daemon programs running in a message passing interface environment, which allows the users to run the control server and client programs on separate computers. The stability of the controllers has been tested using a distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser with a central wavelength of 852.3 nm. A noise spectral analysis of the current controller with and without the use of the diode laser as the active load has been demonstrated. The absorption spectra of 6S 1/2→6P 3/2 transition of 133 C s, as recorded by using the DFB laser system developed, are also presented.

The performance of particulate-laden SO(2) scrubbing in a modified tapered bubble column with internals is reported in this article. The presence of particles improved the particulate-laden SO(2) removal efficiency to about 15% that was elucidated by the facilitated adsorptive mass transport. Experimentation revealed that nearly 100% removal efficiency of particulate-laden SO(2) was achievable without any additives or pretreatment under certain operating condition of the scrubber. An empirical correlation was developed to predict the performance of the modified tapered scrubber. Experimental values fitted excellently well with the predicted values through the correlation (within +/-5% deviation). The performance of the modified tapered bubble scrubber with column internals has been found to be better than a tapered bubble column without any internals.

The performance of a spray tower using an energy efficient two-phase critical flow atomizer on the scrubbing of particulate-laden SO(2) using water and dilute NaOH is reported in this article. Experimentation revealed that SO(2) removal was enhanced due to presence of particles (fly-ash) and almost 100% removal efficiency was achieved in water scrubbing. The removal efficiency is elucidated in reference to atomizing air pressure, droplet diameter and droplet velocity besides other pertinent variables of the system studied. The presence of fly-ash particles improved the removal efficiency to about 20% within the range of variables studied. Empirical and semi-empirical correlations were developed for predicting the removal efficiency in water and dilute NaOH respectively. Predicted data fitted excellently well with experimental values. The performance of the spray tower is compared with the performances of existing systems and very encouraging results are obtained.

The present article aims at developing simple realistic models in order to describe the gaseous removal process of SO(2) by absorption with and without chemical reaction in spray towers. Effects of droplet size, droplet velocity, superficial gas velocity, liquid flow rate and tower height on the performance of such a system are theoretically predicted. Model calculations bring out some very interesting facets of gas scrubbing as functions of droplet diameter and velocity. Four distinct regimes, viz. droplet lean, dense droplet, rigid droplet and droplet inertia controlling regimes, are found important in spray scrubbing process. Model calculation also elucidates the existence of rigid droplet (sphere) for a distinct droplet size at a specific droplet velocity. Theoretical considerations reveal that best performance can be achieved in the droplet inertia-controlling regime. Effect of turbulence on scrubbing is also considered for modeling. The model development and experimental data are limited to use of water-soluble alkaline scrubbing. However, the predicted values agree reasonably well with the available experimental data at lower gas and liquid flow rates for relatively smaller droplets. Models can also be applied to any gas-liquid spray absorption process subject to the assumptions and conditions necessary to describe the specific physico-chemical hydrodynamics of the system. However, incorporation of various droplet interactions can further refine the models for better prediction of removal efficiency.

Scrubbers are used as particulate emission control devices with the increase in stringency of old regulations or promulgation of new regulations. Scrubbing of fly ash in a novel dual flow scrubber, i.e., one water filled bubble section and one section with water-spray, is reported in this article. The presented system included a tapered section in order to achieve the bubble regime. On the other hand, a two-phase critical flow atomizer was used for the generation of spray regime with high degree of spray uniformity. Experiments were carried out for studying the behavior of the system in terms of various pertinent variables. The fly ash removal mechanism was explained in terms of various physical interactions. Electrostatic effect was found to have an insignificant influence on the collection efficiency of fly ash. The removal efficiency was found to decrease with the increase in inlet fly ash loading in the bubble section while it was increased in the spray section. A compromise must, therefore, be struck while operating the scrubber for achieving the desired performance. The effects of other operating variables studied on the removal efficiency remained similar in the regimes under investigation. The combined effect was, however, that the spray regime was dominating. Experimentation also revealed that the bubble section collected particles down to 20 microm size. Detailed experimentation revealed that almost 100% removal efficiency (zero penetration) of fly ash could be achieved in the dual flow scrubber at a QL/QG ratio of 3.0 m3/1000 ACM (actual cubic meter). Almost zero penetration of fly ash particles, clearly demonstrated that the dual flow scrubber with its staging operations met with the stricter emission regulations for particulate matter. Selection of any particulate control device is intrinsically related to the performance as a function of various pertinent variables of the system. Correlations were, therefore, put forward for the prediction of the performances of the bubble and the spray sections in terms of various pertinent variables of the system. The overall removal efficiency achievable in the dual flow scrubber was predicted with the help of these correlations. The predicted values were in excellent agreement with the experimental values (well within +/-5.0% deviation). Comparison of the performance of the present system with the existing systems indicated that the bubble and spray sections either alone or in combination (as in a dual flow scrubber), was energy and efficiency-wise much better than the existing systems. The novelty of the system is also described.
